Family Support and Carer Respite

Carer Respite project

The Building Capacity in Community Mental Health Family Support and Carer Respite Project, funded by the Australian Government under the Mental Health Respite Program, provided a structure to bring people and organisations together to develop new and innovative support and services for families and carers of people with a mental illness.

With the support of project coordinators in each state and territory, new partnership groups were formed and a number of networks established. Local area planning, identification of gaps and opportunities, and the needs of friends, family, carers and consumers based on their lived experience, provided the foundation for the development of a range of partnerships and initiatives.

The project was undertaken at a time of significant change in the mental health sector across Australia. The growing belief in the concept of recovery and person centred approaches must and will have an effect on how we view respite and how family support and carer services are delivered.
