Program Aim This two-day workshop introduces participants to the basic principles and practices of motivational interviewing. The participants will gain an awareness and understanding of the principles of motivational interviewing, practice some of the techniques and build upon their current level of counselling skills.
The main topics include:
  • history and theory of motivational interviewing
  • stages of change
  • five principles of motivational interviewing
  • importance and function of "change talk," and
  • dealing with ambivalence and resistance

Program Overview The Mental Health First Aid program was developed in 2001 at the Centre for Mental Health Research at the Australian National University by Betty Kitchener and Professor Tony Jorm. In 2005 the program moved to Orygen Youth Health Research Centre at the University of Melbourne and the program is now delivered in every state and territory in Australia and internationally.
The course teaches adults how to provide initial support to adults experiencing a mental health crisis or developing a mental health problem. Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of major mental health problems, where and how to get help and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective.

Program Aim The Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (TAA40104) is a nationally recognised and accredited training program. It covers the skills and abilities required to deliver training in a particular industry area and to conduct competency-based assessment in a range of contexts. The course will enable participants to optimise training outcomes in their workplaces, gain national recognition for their workplace training role, and allow them to work as a trainer and assessor in a Registered Training Organisation. Upon successful completion of this training, participants will need to be prepared to be involved as a casual member of the VICSERV Training Team, delivering accredited training and undertaking workplace assessments both at VICSERV and in their region. There will be a focus on the issues faced by consumers of psychiatric services, which relate to the support worker. It will also examine the core values, ethics and expectations, which underpin professional practice in the workplace. This training program provides a foundation for all VICSERV training for the PDRS sector and is tailored to workers with up to 12 month's experience.

Program Overview The workshop will provide a broad overview of the interactions between substance use and mental illness. Participants will have the opportunity to learn practical approaches with a range of interventions and the use of a complex case presentation.
This workshop will introduce participants to the context of dual diagnosis in Australia and models of understanding within current intervention approaches. An overview of how drugs affect the human body will also be provided and participants also learn about the AOD service system and how it can be accessed.

Program Aims and Objectives: Community Service Organisations (CSOs) operate in a context of increasing levels of regulation, quality standards and compliance requirements.
Participants will acquire the skills, knowledge and techniques that are required to plan, measure, monitor and improve services and supports. It will explore the systems, processes and practices involved in monitoring the quality of service provision internally and building effective and efficient processes that will support external compliance requirements.
The course is both theoretical and experiential and will be built around planning and managing a continuous improvement project in the participantís workplace.
By undertaking the course the participants will learn how to:
  • Plan, conduct and lead quality audits and introduce internal auditing systems and processes in the workplace as part of an audit team

Program Aims and Objectives: This half-day workshop introduces participants to the basic principles and practices of living skills assessment and intervention. The participants will be introduced to the Guide to Living Skills Assessment and Intervention developed by Western Region Health Centre. This Guide helps staff working with people at risk of homelessness assess their living skills (such as tenancy, community mobility, cooking, meal planning, shopping, cleaning, personal care, budgeting, banking and money handling, bill paying, medication, appointments, communication and emergencies and first aid) and provide appropriate interventions for independent living.

About ASIST TuneUp is a half-day refresher for participants who completed the two-day ASIST workshop.
The program consolidates and refines the learning from ASIST and examines how it is applied in the real world. The program invites participants to revisit elements that are familiar and provides an opportunity to share and review what they have learned from ASIST. Participants experiences will also provide the opportunity to explore elements that are new.
Successful completion of the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) two-day program is a pre-requisite for this program.

About Many people affected by mental illness are overweight or obese as a result of their illness and as a side effect of medication. The aim of this workshop is that participants will be better able to support clients to make and achieve healthy living goals – to make the healthy choice an easier choice.< /br> The voices of people affected by these issues will feature strongly in this training through use of clips from the new SANE Healthy Living DVD, as well as through the involvement of a trainer with experience of mental illness.< /br> Participants who would like to provide similar training in their own organisation will receive a good grounding in the issues.
